Dive Mozambique - Manta Rays, Whale Sharks & Dolphins

Dive Mozambique

Five minutes after this photograph was taken, the sun had disappeared beneath the horizon.  Looking out from Barra Beach, Mozambique we could see the sun physically move.

Having spent a week of a family holiday at the Barra Lodge Resort, nr Inhambane, Mozambique, myself and a few other divers from Essex are heading back in January 2007 when we are pretty much guaranteed to swim with dolphins, whale sharks and manta rays.  Email me if you are interested in joining this trip.

Maptech Outdoor Navigator GPS Mapping review

Getting to your dive site and back again is an important part of your diving experience. How can you be sure that you have hit the right spot? Well a GPS can help here to pinpoint the dive site within a few metres. Add nautical charts and you have a plotter... Maptech have done exactly that for PDAs with Outdoor Navigator.

Well despite the name Outdoor Navigator is primarily a map display application. Bearing in mind this is the first release there is plenty of scope for additional features to be added. As mentioned above the maps are downloaded from the Maptech MapServer, this has a special section for Outdoor Navigator where you can download either USGS Topographical maps or NOAA nautical charts.

The concept is quite simple, you register on the Maptech website, pay an annual subscription, and download and install the software on your PC then find the maps you want on the map server and download them. The downloaded maps are then transferred to the PDA and you are ready to go. You then have a year in which you can download and store any of the available maps. When the subscription expires the maps you have downloaded will still work so will the application. You can then renew you subscription if you need to download any further maps.

Garmin GPSmap 60Cx review

The Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx GPS receiverSometime ago Garmin was synonymous with GPS. Over the last few years this has changed somewhat, with GPS becoming a Mass-Market Consumer product. Where a few years ago handheld GPS receivers were the main sellers these have been far outstripped by Street Routing GPS (certainly in Europe anyway).

As the technologies have moved on so have the GPS receivers. Garmin have recently announced a major upgrade to their range of Handheld GPS receivers. Here we review the Garmin GPSmap 60Cx an all singing all dancing handheld GPS receiver.

Weymouth - Dive Centres & Clubs, Boat Charters, and accomodation

Weymouth & Portland boasts an excellent Dive Boat Charter Fleet. The fleet is ever evolving to keep up to date with new technology and the distance to wrecks is no longer an issue with the new fast modern boats that make up this well established fleet. The well renowned skippers are extremely knowledgeable and can provide the best advice when considering which wrecks to dive to suit the weather, tides and divers abilities. The majority of the boats have lifts, toilets and also provide lunch as part of the dive boat charter package.
